The awards season horse race is heating up as The Producers Guild of America has announced its nominees for Best Picture of the Year, with a few surprises and snubs.

The 10 movie noms of the PGA mirror many of the popular critics' choices for the ten best of the year: The Artist, Bridesmaids, The Descendants, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Help, Hugo, The Ides of March, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball and War Horse.

Some may consider Bridesmaids to be a surprise choice, taking a spot away from more serious contenders such as The Tree of Life, In the Land of Blood and Honey, Contagion, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Drive and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

The Bridesmaids nom is notable in that it shows the PGA to be slowly but surely embracing comedy; two years ago, what many consider to be Bridesmaids' male counterpart, The Hangover, was snubbed. The PGA choices are usually spot-on with the Academy Award Best Picture choices (last year they picked 9 out of 10), and now Bridesmaids has some serious fuel as a possible Oscar contender.

In the Best Animated Film category, The Adventures of Tintin, Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots and Rango will duke it out.
