Longtime Hollywood actress Jodie Foster took the opportunity of getting a lifetime achievement honor at the Golden Globes Sunday night to surprisingly address her personal life.

After offering the usual thanks to her Hollywood colleagues for their decades of support, Foster -- who was receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement -- then struck a very personal tone.

"So while I'm here being all confessional, I guess I just have a sudden urge to say something that I've never really been able to air in public," she said in her acceptance speech. "So... a declaration, that I'm a little nervous about, but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now.

She continued: "But you know, I'm just gonna put it out there, right, loud and proud, right? I'm gonna need your support on this." She then confessed to the attentive crowd, "I am single," which brought thundering laughter.

"Yes I am, I am single," she continued, "No, I'm kidding, but I mean I'm not really kidding, but I'm kind of kidding. It's not going to be a big coming out speech tonight," she said. "Because I already did my coming out speech about a thousand years ago back in the stone age." With that comment, she explained that she had come out as "fragile young girl" and then "to trusted friends and family and co-workers, and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her."

Foster, 50, ended with a dramatic revelation about a former partner. "There is no way I could ever stand here without acknowledging one of the deepest loves of my life, my heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love, but righteous soul sister in life." She identified the person as her "most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard."
