Emmy Flashback: Oprah '02
By ROBERT PACE
August 31, 2012
Although Oprah had won 47 Daytime Emmy Awards, she requested to be excluded from consideration for Daytime Emmys after 2000, so when received an award at the 2002 Primetime Emmys, it wasn't for her face appearing on the television screen, but more about what that face meant to the world on the other end of the screen.
With her self-titled daytime talk show in its prime and the media mogul's influence spreading exponentially throughout the world, she was honored at the 2002 Emmys with the inaugural Bob Hope Humanitarian award, which would later be received by Bill Cosby, Danny Thomas, and George Clooney.

"That blew me away. Like, I'm having an out-of-body experience, but that was really something," Oprah says just after receiving the award and delivering an iconic acceptance speech. "That was a high point in my life."
Oprah's speech, which she claims to have improvised, was about her father's goodwill in taking in less fortunate men to their home for meals, which she didn't enjoy as a child but learned to love later in life for the lessons that her father taught her in the process.

"I want you to know that this award to me means that I will continue to strive to give back to the world what it has given to me, so that I might even be more worthy of tonight's honor," Oprah concluded her speech.
