Katherine Heigl had a very special year in 2007. In addition to starring in the successful comedy Knocked Up, she was nominated for her first ever Emmy award for Grey's Anatomy.
Although she was excited and honored to be nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award for her work in her third season on Grey's, she wasn't expecting to receive the award--and neither was her mother.
Heigl went on to win the award over a few Sopranos actresses and her fellow Grey's co-stars, which would prove to be her only Emmy nomination and award to date.
"[My mom] was like...'I think you're really great; I think you're really talented, but I really don't think you have a shot tonight, so let's just enjoy it,'" Heigl says of her mom's words before the show, with which Heigl agreed.
With her low expectations wholly exceeded, Heigl was visibly surprised upon hearing her name called for the award. After years of struggling to break through in the acting world, it was quite the delightful surprise for her.
"I've been working really hard for a long time," says Heigl, who made her first film in 1992. "There [are] a lot of really, amazingly talented actors who work very hard and don't get this moment, so this is for them too because I know what it's like. I do."
