Emmy Flashback '95: Streisand Balances Two

By ROBERT PACE

September 14, 2012

As a classic all-around entertainer, Barbra Streisand has been featured in various entertainment spheres, and has subsequently won a variety of awards in her extensive career. At the 1995 Emmys, she received two awards for combining two of those spheres.

Thirty years after she won her first Emmy for her TV special My Name is Barbra, Streisand won two Emmys for her performance in a TV special of her concert, simply titled Barbra Streisand: The Concert.

In the pressroom after the show, the entertainer accentuates the symbolism of the two awards that she holds in her hands.

"I always have doubt," she says of her mindset prior to receiving the awards. "People should know the truth: you can be powerful on one hand and absolutely mush on the other. In a sense, they balance one another. It's like the chaos and the calm, the strength and the weakness. It makes for a human being."

She later continues: "As I said, there's strength and weakness and there's weakness, and they balance one another, and they're necessary. It's not 'either, or'; it's 'both.' It's 'and.' It's like these two."

Streisand balances her two shiny awards as if on a see-saw as she elaborates on the seeming paradox of being powerful yet feeble at the same time.

Having worked in entertainment since her teens, Streisand also gets philosophical on the arts in general, which she positions as "the memory, the history of a nation" after being inspired by actress Shirley Knight at the ceremony.

Streisand went on to win an Emmy once again in 2001 for another TV concert special.
