Emmy Flashback '03: Messing is Speechless

By ROBERT PACE

September 20, 2012

Will & Grace won a total of 16 Emmy awards out of an impressive 83 nominations in its eight-season run, but no Emmy was more valuable to the show or its cast than the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award was for Debra Messing, who was rendered speechless after accepting it.

While Messing surely appreciated being nominated by the Academy in four consecutive years since the show's sophomore season, one can imagine that witnessing three of the show's other main characters receive individual awards before her made her wonder if she would ever receive a coveted personal award.

"They've been really just wonderful in rooting for me 'cause I've been the only one in the cast who's never had the experience of them calling my name," she says in the featured flashback.

As Messing walks on air to speak with ET's former co-host Mary Hart backstage, it's apparent just how ecstatic she is to have finally received the award, which came three years after Will & Grace won Outstanding Comedy Series.

"I'm shaking; I'm speechless," she says with a limitless smile. "I don't even know what I just said up there; I just know that I hit the microphone. I'm speechless; I'm so excited; and I'm so stunned. I can't believe it."
