Jennifer Hudson took home the first award of the night, and her first Grammy at Sunday's Grammy Awards.
The singer took home the prize for Best R&B Album for her self-titled album. After accepting her award from music legend Whitney Houston, she thanked God and then added: "I would like to thank my family in heaven and those who are here today."
The acceptance speech marked among the first words in public for the singer and Academy award-winning actress since her mother, brother and nephew were murdered last fall in her home city of Chicago.
