Ravi Shankar, renowned sitarist and father to jazz singer Norah Jones, passed away on late Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 11, 2012, at age 92.
The famed musician had difficulty breathing this past week and was admitted to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, Calif., CNN reports. "Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgeons and doctors taking care of him, his body was not able to withstand the strain of the surgery," his wife and daughter told the news outlet.
Shankar was known for bringing over Indian music to the United States after developing a friendship with Beatles member George Harrison and played well into his 90s, even sharing the stage with his daughter Anoushka this past November.
