An upbeat Matt Lauer showed up on Thursday's Tonight Show, and kept it light and positive when speaking about the backlash he and the TODAY show have been receiving since the departure of Ann Curry.
"It's been an interesting year. No question about it," Lauer, 55, told late-night host Jay Leno when asked about all the bad press he's been getting. "But the fact of the matter is, everyday millions of people still invite us into their homes to deliver the news. I have no complaints."
The anchor adds, "I love this job. I really do."
Lauer also commented on the kindness Kathie Lee Gifford, who hosts the last hour of TODAY, has shown him through all of this. "She is one of the dearest people, and she's kind and compassionate and she's been there," Lauer said of his co-worker. "My mother always told me in times of adversity, you find out who your friends are. Kathie Lee is a great friend."
