Alec Baldwin Says 'Goodbye To Public Life'

By JACKIE WILLIS

On the heels of Shia LaBeouf announcing he's "not famous anymore," Alec Baldwin also plans to say "goodbye to the public life."

"I'm aware that it's ironic that I'm making this case in the media--but this is the last time I'm going to talk about my personal life in an American publication ever again," Baldwin announced in an Op-Ed piece for New York Magazine.

Following numerous run-ins with the paparazzi and the media, Baldwin says he is fed up. "Now I loathe and despise the media in a way I did not think possible," the 55-year-old 30 Rock star admits. "I used to engage with the media knowing that some of it would be adversarial, but now it's superfluous at best and toxic at its worst."

Calling out The Huffington Post and MSNBC, his former employer, the actor bashes "New Media" saying that "anything good you do is tossed in a pit, and you are measured by who you are on your worst day."

"They've gotta have clicks for their advertisers, so they're going to need as much Kim Kardashian and wardrobe malfunctions as possible."

The Emmy winner also implies that he may be moving soon. "I probably have to move out of New York. I just can't live in New York anymore. Everything I hated about L.A. I'm beginning to crave. L.A. is a place where you live behind a gate, you get in a car, your interaction with the public is minimal. I used to hate that," he writes. "But New York has changed. Manhattan is like Beverly Hills. And the soul of New York has moved to Brooklyn, where everything new and exciting seems to be. I have to accept that. I want my newest child to have as normal and decent a life as I can provide. New York doesn't seem the place for that anymore."

Baldwin goes on to address the alleged gay slur he made at a paparazzo. Name dropping his famous gay friends Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon and Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the actor continues, "Am I a homophobe? Look, I work in show business. I am awash in gay people, as colleagues and as friends."

The piece wraps up with him calling out LaBeouf, who was fired from Baldwin's New York show Orphans. "Shia LaBeouf went to a film screening recently and he wore a bag over his head and the bag says 'I AM NOT FAMOUS ANYMORE.' And there was truly a part of me that felt sorry for him, oddly enough."

The actor adds, "There's a way I could have done things differently. I know that. If I offended anyone along the way, I do apologize. But the solution for me now is: I've lived this for 30 years, I'm done with it."

What are your thoughts on Baldwin's recent proclamations?

UPDATE: Following Baldwin's statement that he'll no longer be commenting on his personal life, his wife Hilaria Baldwin posted an Instagram photo of their daughter Carmen, writing: "Our official statement is coming from the most eloquent & intelligent of our clan: Carmen @iamabfalecbaldwin"
