Nick Cannon posed in white face in promotion of his new album White People Party Music, which hits stores on April 1, but not everyone was laughing.
On March 24, 2014, the 33-year-old began sharing Instagram videos and photos of his new persona, writing: "It's official... I'm White!!! #WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft 'Bro I got drafted!!'"
He declared that his new persona was Connor Smallnut.
Needless to say, the costume caused some controversy, with some commenters calling the America's Got Talent host "racist" and "hypocritical."
"Did Mariah [Carey] endorse this? Bad marketing tool," @mss_carter2u, wrote.
Another one of his Instagram followers, @nikkijlove, wrote: "His wife [Mariah] is biracial. I don't think he's racist just ignorant and wants attention [because] he fell off. Epic fail and wrong."
Cannon tweeted to his critics, writing: "It's funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!"
He even responded to one commenter, who wrote: "@jamesjoe: @NickCannon let me relax, have fun & wear black face. Lets see how everyone reacts." Cannon responded, "Do it! I dare you."
