We're counting down 20 of the most notable films (or film series) based on books.
First up is the 'Lord of the Rings' series, based on the wildly popular trilogy of fantasy novels by J. R. R. Tolkien. The films tell the fantastical tale of the denizens of Middle-earth who must battle a dark force in order to save their world. Directed by Peter Jackson, the trilogy cost almost $300 million to make and were filmed in New Zealand simultaneously over a period of several years. The films, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003, were nominated for dozens of Oscars and won 17 over the course of the series.
