'The Color Purple'
Based on the novel of the same name by Alice Walker, 'The Color Purple' recounts the many hardships and eventual transformation of Celie, an African-American woman living in Georgia around the turn of the 20th century. Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey both picked up Oscar nominations for acting in the 1985 film, which was directed by Steven Spielberg and received 11 total Oscar nominations.
