George and Amal Clooney Donate $1 Million to Southern Poverty Law Center in Wake of Charlottesville Rally
The Clooney Foundation for Justice is joining forces with the organization.
George and Amal Clooney are giving back in a big way.
On Tuesday morning, the Clooney Foundation for Justice made a sizable donation to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a legal advocacy organization specializing in civil rights and public interest litigation. The $1 million contribution to the nonprofit comes in the wake of a white nationalist rally that led to the death of counterprotester Heather Heyer.
"We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States," George and Amal said in a joint statement. "What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate."
This isn't the first time the 56-year-old actor and 39-year-old civil rights attorney have been philanthropic this year. In March, the couple donated $10,000 to Camp Cocker Rescue, a California animal rescue organization.
It's no secret that the Clooneys have a soft spot for animals in need. In October 2015, the couple brought home a 4-year-old basset hound named Millie from California’s San Gabriel Valley Humane Society, and a few months later, they adopted a terrier named Nate for George's parents.
