After nine years on "Law & Order," JESSE L. MARTIN will be exiting his role as Detective Ed Green on the long-running drama, as ANTHONY ANDERSON joins the cast as Detective Kevin Bernard, an Internal Affairs officer who wants to work homicide.

Anderson wants to make it clear that his character did not volunteer for the IA job; rather he was recruited straight out of the police academy.

With the departures of DENNIS FARINA and FRED THOMPSON from the long-running NBC hit series, "Law & Order," the show enters into a new phase with the addition of two new characters. When it returns to the tube Wednesday, January 2, at 9 p.m. on NBC with a two-hour special, JEREMY SISTO will join the "Law" side of the cast as Detective Cyrus Lupo, who will partner with Detective Ed Green (JESSE L. MARTIN). And, being added to the "Order" side of the team is LINUS ROCHE, playing Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Cutter, who will step into the shoes previously filled by SAM WATERSTON, whose character has been promoted to the district attorney job vacated by Thompson.

"Law & Order" is famous for ripping stories from the headlines. A perfect example is tonight's show, starring LIZA MINNELLI as a former beauty queen whose daughter was murdered on Halloween in 1992 -- the case is never solved until the present day, when a pedophile confesses.

But the series is also famous for recycling its talent. For example, CHRIS NOTH began his career on the mothership "Law & Order" as Detective Mike Logan, partnering with the late JERRY ORBACH, who played Detective Lennie Briscoe. Now Chris is on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," reprising his "L&O" character. He isn't the only actor on the show who has starred on a different series in the franchise. He was joined this season by JULIANNE NICHOLSON, who first became a part of the "L&O" family as a member of "Conviction." But on "Criminal Intent," she plays a different character.
