DONNA SUMMER is releasing Crayons, her first album of all-new material in 17 years, on May 20, and the legendary former disco queen sat down exclusively with our own MARY HART in the music studio to deliver the 411!
The "Hot Stuff" and "Last Dance" singer -- who will perform live on the ET stage on Tuesday, May 20 -- gets candid about her private problems early in her career, struggling with "severe depression" and admitting to a suicide attempt in the late '70s.
Disco fever continues with the spotlight on Disco Divas, and there was no greater diva back in the day than DONNA SUMMER, with hits such as "Hot Stuff," "Last Dance" and "Bad Girls" crowning her the queen of the scene.
Our MARK STEINES actually caught up with the disco queen this past August, while she was performing part of her summer tour for her latest CD, The Journey: The Very Best of Donna Summer. At the height of her fame, Donna says she considered herself more of a comedian than a sex symbol, and she was definitely not a diva, despite the fact that the term is tossed around loosely.
The iconic MADONNA is famous for starting trends and influencing fashion. With the release of her brand new album, Confessions on a Dance Floor, which contains actual ABBA samples and a more disco-esque looking music goddess -- is disco fever back?
A feathered-haired Madonna told our VANESSA MINNILLO Monday that she was "obsessed" with the whole 'Saturday Night Fever' era. So what ever happened to '70s legends like BARRY GIBB and DONNA SUMMER? Watch ET tonight for the groove on all your fave '70s music icons!
ARETHA FRANKLIN was one of the late LUTHER VANDROSS' closest friends for almost 30 years. The Queen of Soul brought down the house with her rendition of "Amazing Grace" at his funeral, and now she's contributing a song to a new tribute album dedicated to the man with the velvet voice.
Aretha, who has struggled with her own weight for years, admits that her weight worries mirror those of Luther, who gained and lost upwards of 100 pounds at a time several times during his life.
Back in the '70s, DONNA SUMMER earned the title Disco Queen with chartbusters such as "Love to Love You Baby," "On the Radio" and "Last Dance." These days the music icon is still "Hot Stuff," as MARK STEINES discovered when he caught up with her backstage at the Universal Amphitheater. Donna was at the domed venue performing as part of her summer tour for her latest CD The Journey: The Very Best of Donna Summer.
"It is a different time," she admits. "I am older. The crowd is probably older, some of them. But I think it has a different vibe. It is almost emotional now for me and the audience. I think that now a lot of the songs are mixed with memories of their youth and are poignant and even sad, so when they come to the concert, the expression on people's faces is different."
The remaining seven contestants celebrated '70s dance fever on "Idol" this week, but one contestant is no longer "stayin' alive" -- ousted "Idol" ANWAR ROBINSON!
In a twist on the Wednesday night results show, the seven contenders were split into two groups onstage -- the top and bottom scorers. With VONZELL SOLOMON, CONSTANTINE MAROULIS and CARRIE UNDERWOOD in one group, and ANTHONY FEDOROV, Anwar and SCOTT SAVOL in another, host RYAN SEACREST asked the remaining BO BICE to join whichever group he thought was safe from elimination. After first standing in the center on his own, he was then asked to join Vonzell's group.
Singing stars like JOSS STONE, DONNA SUMMER and MARIAH CAREY have come together to sing for a good cause -- the VH1 "Save the Music" concert, airing Sunday, April 17 at 9 p.m. The musicians reveal how music has impacted their lives.
"It puts you in a good mood or a bad mood if it's really crazy," Joss says. "It's like a drug. I don't want to sound too cheesy and weird, but it is. Sometimes in the morning -- I'm the worst morning person in the world -- I can't even talk until I eat or listen to music!"
In an "American Idol" stunner, viewers issued LA TOYA LONDON her walking papers on last night's results show. It is the biggest upset since JENNIFER HUDSON was voted out the night of her best-ever performance, and once again raises the question: Is this a talent competition or a popularity contest?
Tune in to tonight's ET, and get all the latest "Idol" news from judge and ET special correspondent PAULA ABDUL, who will bring us all the backstage reactions to this stunning outcome and examine the events leading up to it.
It was "thunderin' and lightnin'" on the "American Idol" set last night when the remaining hopefuls, FANTASIA BARRINO, DIANA DeGARMO, LA TOYA LONDON and JASMINE TRIAS, got things dancing for Disco Week.
On tonight's ET, we'll get the latest "Idol" update from judge and ET special correspondent PAULA ABDUL, who told us that Jasmine, who broke down in tears onstage, was still upset backstage.
It's Tuesday Night Fever on the "American Idol" stage tonight as the four remaining divas -- FANTASIA BARRINO, DIANA DeGARMO, LA TOYA LONDON and JASMINE TRIAS -- get things dancing for Disco Week.
On tonight's ET, we'll get the latest "Idol" update from judge and ET special correspondent PAULA ABDUL and speak to this week's guest judge, disco queen DONNA SUMMER.
DONNA SUMMER, the singing sensation who was once titled the "Queen of Disco," has come out with a tell-all autobiography called Ordinary Girl: The Journey that reveals her life's inspirational ups and very dark downs. Tonight, ET sits down with the talented diva for an intimate chat.
Although Summer grew up happy, surrounded by family ("I can honestly say that I can't conceive of growing up differently"), she left her native Boston for New York to pursue her singing and to seek safety from certain dangers back home. "There were different parts of my life I needed to get away from," she says. "My life was threatened so getting out of Boston made me feel a little safer."
