ET's THEA ANDREWS was on hand as "Star Trek" actor GEORGE TAKEI and his longtime partner BRAD ALTMAN obtained a marriage license during a media-packed ceremony in West Hollywood.
Takei, 71, tells ET that his 54-year-old partner Brad proposed to him as the two were eating, just after the news was announced that the California Supreme Court had legalized marriage for same-sex couples. "He said George, will you marry me? And I said, 'Darn it,' with my mouth full, 'I meant to do that, you beat me to it,'" Takei said.
GEORGE TAKEI -- Mr. Sulu himself from the original "Star Trek" -- looks forward to marrying his partner of 21 years, the Associated Press reports. BRAD ALTMAN said he proposed to Takei by getting down on one knee and popping the big question as the actor munched on a sandwich in their kitchen.
Since then, the couple have bought each other turquoise and silver wedding rings for Sept. 14 nuptials that may verge on a "Star Trek" reunion! WALTER KOENIG, who "Trekkies" know as Chekov, will be the best man, while NICHELLE NICHOLS, who played Uhura, will be the matron of honor, according to the AP.

Another family connection was made last week when "Star Trek" alum GEORGE TAKEI was introduced as Hiro's (MASI OKA) father. Needless to say, Hiro and Claire will find themselves dealing with dysfunctional family relationships in the coming weeks.
"Kaito Nakamura [Takei] is a father and with it comes consequences ... you know what's intriguing about 'Heroes' is that it examines those consequences of life," said Takei, whose character is at odds with his son because he wants Hiro to honor the family tradition by working for his business in Japan.

"Even before my teens, in grammar school, I started noticing boys and they were more interesting to me than girls," he says. "Then as a teenager you become more aware of your sexuality, but that became a private thing. At that time, the issue of homosexuality was peripheral -- and in denial --and you kept quiet about that. It remains a very private thing, but the world has changed now."
