ET confirms that legendary actor JAMES GARNER has suffered a minor stroke. He has undergone surgery and the prognosis is good. He will be home in a few days. The Oscar-nominated star is 80.

Hot up-and-comers RYAN GOSLING and RACHEL McADAMS steam up the screen in 'The Notebook,' the sweeping, period romantic drama in theaters June 25. The cute onscreen couple sounds off about true love -- and how the movie was almost a vehicle for BRITNEY SPEARS!

"I'm sure Britney would have done a great job," says Rachel, the former blonde bombshell of 'Mean Girls' who ultimately won the lead role of Allie. "I'm sure it would've been a totally different movie." Ryan tells ET that he did indeed have a screen test with Britney -- and that he used to be a Mouseketeer with the pop princess! "I hadn't seen her since she was probably 12," he says. "She's grown up. She was really good, actually. She did a really nice job."
