CBS Entertainment President NINA TASSLER has released the following statement regarding the sci-fi drama series "Jericho":
"The March 25th episode of 'Jericho' will be the series finale. Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more. We thank an engaged and spirited fan base for keeping the show alive this long, and an outstanding team of producers, cast and crew that went through creative hoops to deliver a compelling, high quality second season. We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try. We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We're proud of everyone's efforts."

"Jericho" fans can rest easy for now. NINA TASSLER, President of CBS Entertainment, has issued the following statement to fans of "Jericho": "Over the past few weeks, you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a primetime television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard. As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of 'Jericho' for mid-season next year."
That said, she points out that for the series to progress beyond that, the SKEET ULRICH-starrer will need to get better ratings than it earned its first year on the air. Still, the extra seven episodes will allow the writers to resolve the post-apocalyptic story and Jericho's conflict with the neighboring town of New Bern.
CBS post-nuclear drama "Jericho," airing Wednesdays at 8 p.m., is a perfect example of how a show that is put on hiatus can be kept alive by a strong fanbase on the Internet. During its absence from the tube this past December and January, the drama with its multiple layers of mysteries -- became a hot topic in the blogging world.
For those out of the loop, the series tells the story of how the inhabitants of the town of Jericho, KS, are forced to work together to survive the traumatic aftermath of a nuclear bomb hitting nearby Denver. The mystery of who set off the bomb, how many cities were affected and the secret lives of some of the characters has found a wide -- and vociferous -- audience on the Internet.
It was a day like any other in the rural town of Jericho, KS, when a mushroom cloud on the horizon changed the life of its residents forever. Jake Green (SKEET ULRICH), the son of Jericho Mayor Johnston Green (GERALD McRANEY), who left Jericho years before, returned on the day of the detonation and became an unlikely hero when he saved a group of schoolchildren and their teacher after their bus crashed as a result of the nuclear blast.
The townsfolk now know that both Atlanta and Denver have been nuked, but they are not sure what is going on in the rest of the world, as all communication lines are down and there is no power. So, the town remains isolated, wondering about the true extent and nature of the disaster. In episode three, airing tonight at 8 p.m. on CBS, Jake and Heather (SPRAGUE GRAYDEN) decide to leave Jericho and try to learn the truth, only to find someone sick and disfigured from radiation poisoning. It presents them with a moral dilemma: Do they help him, or leave him to die because of the possibility that they could become contaminated?
The only thing for sure on Wednesday night is that ABC has a lock on the 9 p.m. timeslot, where it is keeping its hit series "Lost." Its competition on CBS will be "Criminal Minds." NBC will put "The Biggest Loser" in the timeslot, while the CW has "One Tree Hill" and FOX will introduce "Justice."
"'Lost' is the show that every other show wants to be," says CRAIG TOMASHOFF, West Coast Bureau Chief for TV Guide. "Right now, 'Lost' is the equivalent of HARRISON FORD in his prime. Women wanted to be with him and men wanted to be him. Everybody wants to be 'Lost.' The way that 'Lost' left viewers hanging [in the season finale] couldn't have been better to set the stage for next year."
As the No. 1 network, CBS doesn't have many fixes to make to its fall schedule, but there are a few timeslots where new programs will be added, with JAMES WOODS, STANLEY TUCCI, SKEET ULRICH, RAY LIOTTA, VIRGINIA MADSEN and JOE PANTOLIANO adding their star power in several new shows.
Woods is set to headline the legal hour-long series "Shark," also starring JERI RYAN. Pantoliano, who was "The Handler" in 2003, returns to CBS in "Waterfront," playing a not on the up-and-up mayor (mid-season); Ulrich stars in the apocalyptic drama "Jericho;" and Madsen and Liotta play career criminals in "Smith."
It's just one thing after another for DELTA BURKE and hubby GERALD McRANEY. First the "Designing Women" star was diagnosed with diabetes, then her hubby learned he had cancer and, most recently, Delta fell off a riser and fractured her ankle while rehearsing for her Los Angeles stage debut in DEL SHORES' Southern Baptist Sissies.
"I just laid there for a moment and then tried to get up," she recalls. "I was limping. I thought it was nothing. Then I got home that night and iced it, but I looked like the elephant man the next day. It was not pretty. I thought, 'This is not going to work at all.' I had to go in and see the doctor and get x-rays."
