MATTIE STEPANEK was known as a poet, a philosopher, and a peacemaker. He was a bestselling author on the New York Times list who read his poems for OPRAH and LARRY KING, and he became fast friends with former President JIMMY CARTER. He was also just 13 years old when he died of dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy, a rare neuromuscular disease.
Now, Mattie's memory lives on in a new book of prose and e-mail correspondence assembled by President Carter, Just Peace: A Message of Hope, and ET's own JANN CARL sat down with Jimmy and Mattie's mom, JENI, to discuss his legacy.
