MATTIE STEPANEK was known as a poet, a philosopher, and a peacemaker. He was a bestselling author on the New York Times list who read his poems for OPRAH and LARRY KING, and he became fast friends with former President JIMMY CARTER. He was also just 13 years old when he died of dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy, a rare neuromuscular disease.

Now, Mattie's memory lives on in a new book of prose and e-mail correspondence assembled by President Carter, Just Peace: A Message of Hope, and ET's own JANN CARL sat down with Jimmy and Mattie's mom, JENI, to discuss his legacy.

MATTIE STEPANEK had three wishes: To have at least one of his books published, to share his message of hope and peace on "The OPRAH WINFREY Show" and to talk peace with his hero, President JIMMY CARTER.

Those are pretty big wishes for anyone; much less a child confined to a wheelchair who relied on a ventilator, but Mattie, who was 13 when he died on June 22, 2004 of mitochondrial myopathy, achieved all of them and much more. He was known by millions from his writings and his television appearances to get his message of peace out to the world.
