Nigel Lythgoe -- executive producer and judge of "So You Think You Can Dance" and former producer of "American Idol" -- talks to ET about Paula Abdul's future as a judge and the future of "Idol."

It is only two months since David Cook was crowned the "American Idol," but plans for season eight are already underway as are auditions in San Francisco today in the search for the next singing sensation. And according to the show's executive producer Nigel Lythoge, who was at a press conference for another of his FOX shows -- "So You Think You Can Dance" -- not much will change next year.
"American Idol" executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE puts the kibosh on rumors that DAVID ARCHULETA's dad, JEFF, is a stage parent and that he was banned from rehearsals.
After Tuesday night's performance of a DOLLY PARTON classic, "American Idol" contestant DAVID COOK was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital after it was decided he required medical attention.
Last night, "American Idol"'s Final 12 guys sang the '60s. Tonight, it's the girls' chance to show the American public what they've got. But before the voting starts, executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE wants to set the record straight, and make sure that all the press about CARLY SMITHSON's previous record contract doesn't negatively impact her chances.
When "American Idol"'s Final 12 guys take to the stage tonight, they will be singing songs from the '60s, including some DOORS and some NEIL SEDAKA, according to the show's executive producer NIGEL LYTHGOE.
"American Idol" Executive Producer NIGEL LYTHGOE told reporters on Thursday that this season, the hit music competition will not be using as many mentors as in the past, but of the ones they do select, BRITNEY SPEARS is not an option.
SIMON COWELL just said that this will be the strongest Top 12 we have ever had on "American Idol." What's your opinion?
NIGEL LYTHGOE: (Laughs) I think we are all paid to say that every year. I would say we have got some excellent individuals. Last year, I said I thought it would be our strongest Top 12, and I still stand by that, even though a lot of people dissed us last year with our final group. But as a group, they were the strongest one, I think, of other years, where we have had bad people in it, and you kept your fingers crossed that they are going to be voted out, or you are embarrassed by them. I wasn't embarrassed by anyone last year, even young SANJAYA, I thought, came through with all the hits he was taking. I thought as a group, the MELINDAs, the BLAKEs, CHRISs, they were all pretty strong.
America has dance fever, so it is no surprise that FOX is bringing back "So You Think You Can Dance" for a third season. Unlike "Dancing with the Stars," which features celebrities paired with professional dancers, "So You Think You Can Dance," premiering Thursday, March 24 at 8 p.m. on FOX, features unknowns trying to catch a break.
"We are looking for great dancers. There is no question about that, but the show is actually looking for America's favorite dancer, not necessarily the best technical dancer. We are looking for somebody with that extra-special star quality. That something special you can't define that is going to make America fall in love with them, " says British beauty CAT DEELEY, who is back as the show's host for the second year.
As the Top 10 try to make their mark on tonight's episode of "American Idol," Executive Producer NIGEL LYTHGOE takes time out to answer questions about the hit talent competition.
ET: The ratings are down about 10 percent for the performance show, and the results show a little less. Some of the attrition has to do with the switch to daytime savings time. Are you concerned about the loss?
ROSIE O'DONNELL is once again stirring up conflict with her opinions expressed on "The View."
The TV talker blasted "American Idol" by saying the show was "racist" and "weightist" based on the decision to disqualify season two contestant FRENCHIE DAVIS because she posed for revealing photographs, while current hopeful ANTONELLA BARBA has been allowed to stay in the competition despite racy photos of her surfacing in recent weeks.
