Anaheim band NO DOUBT are back in the studio this week, but without charismatic frontwoman GWEN STEFANI, who's in the midst of a solo tour.
British music mag NME reports that Gwen's band mates -- TONY KANAL, ADRIAN YOUNG and TOM DUMONT -- are laying down music without lyrics while their singer continues her worldwide tour in support of her second solo album, The Sweet Escape.

"This album is surprisingly different than the last one," says the sultry singer. "I started recording it last year before [my son] KINGSTON was born, and it's definitely evolved over the last year. The dance sound is very 'now.' It's modern ... not so retro."
Sweet Escape opens with THE NEPTUNES-produced lead single, "Wind It Up," a freaky club-banger influenced by, of all things, The Sound of Music. Up next is the title track, which features backing vocals by smooth-rhyming rapper AKON, over the hook.
