'The Gift'

Sam Raimi (the 'Spider-Man' trilogy) directed and Billy Bob Thornton co-wrote this 2000 thriller inspired by the alleged psychic experiences of Thornton's mother. Set in the sticks of Georgia, Cate Blanchett plays Annie, a widowed mother with psychic abilities who is enlisted to probe the murder of a wealthy country club girl (Katie Holmes) who was engaged to a local high school principal (Greg Kinnear). Add helpings of an abusive wife-beater (Keanu Reeves railing on Hilary Swank), a man haunted by nightmares (Giovanni Ribisi), more shady characters and Annie's own past demons, and you have the recipe for some serious southern thrills and melodrama.
