'Cronos' on Blu-ray
Guillermo del Toro's ('Pan's Labyrinth,' 'Hellboy') imaginative, haunting feature debut about immortality is now on Criterion Collection hi-def Blu-ray. The unorthodox fantasy tale follows kindly antiques dealer Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi), whose life becomes a nightmare when he finds an ancient golden device shaped like a scarab. He soon becomes transformed by the scarab's sinister, addictive powers and becomes the target of a mysterious American (Ron Perlman).
Special features on the newly restored hi-def digital transfer (director and cinematographer approved) director-approved special edition include a new and improved English subtitle translation, approved by the director; two audio commentaries, one with del Toro, the other with the film's producers; a booklet featuring an essay by film critic Maitland McDonagh and excerpts from del Toro's notes for the film; del Toro's unreleased 1987 short horror film "Geometria"; "Welcome to Bleak House" video tour by del Toro of his home offices and personal collections; new video interviews; stills gallery; trailers and more.
