'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan'
The Story: Director Wayne Wang brings an old fable and a contemporary tale together in this film inspired by Lisa See's bestselling novel. It's 19th century China, and Lily and Snow Flower have a laotong, or lifelong, friendship. The two face all of life's hardships together, until marriage and children get in the way. The story then skips ahead to present day China, where the laotong's descendants, Nina and Sophia, try to keep up their friendship while having love lives and careers. Can they keep the laotong, or will they be forced to give up their ancestral bond?
