A 'Bridesmaids' Sequel Without Kristen Wiig?

Will there be a Bridesmaids sequel without Kristen Wiig? Is it even possible?

The modestly budgeted $32 million comedy, co-written by and starring Wiig, was a big hit for Universal this summer, earning $288 million worldwide. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the in-demand Saturday Night Live star has no plans to move forward with a follow-up.

"We aren't working on that," Wiig, who co-wrote the film with Annie Mumolo, tells the Reporter. "Annie and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else."

One speculative reason as to why Wiig may be reluctant to capitalize on the success on the film may have to do with the "underwhelming" bonus check each cast member received following the runaway success of the movie (a reported $100,000 for Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper). Wiig was said to be courted by Universal chief Ron Meyer with a reported eight-figure payday, but she held firm.

Bridesmaids producer Judd Apatow tells the Reporter, "The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one. We don't want to do it unless it can be great. I don't think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year." A source adds, "I don't think [Judd] would proceed without Kristen and Annie's full participation."

With the thought of another franchise in mind, Universal remains optimistic, telling the Reporter, "We are over the moon with the success of Bridesmaids, and if we do a sequel we want to get it right. We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts, and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward."

The Reporter says that if they do move forward without Wiig, Universal is focused on breakout star McCarthy as a key player in the project. But at this stage of the game, it looks like it'll be a long wait until we see a Bridesmaids sequel on the big screen.
