In the touching scene, Albert attempts to blend in as one of the guys at a pub, finds himself struggling to smoke a cigarette credibly -- and then fields Dr. Halloran's (Brendan Gleeson) innocent line of questioning, asking if Albert has any secrets. The moment is all the more compelling because we know that Albert indeed has a big secret.

Adapted from a short story by Irish author George Moore, Albert Nobbs casts the multiple Oscar nominee Close as the title character, a woman passing herself off as a man in order to work and survive in 19th century Ireland. But after posing as the opposite gender for three decades, she finds herself in a bizarre love triangle -- and trapped in a prison of her own making.
