In light of their meager budget, star John Malkovich explained that one of the crew's main objectives was to give the film the look of a big-budget picture. Hence, they decided to shoot in Mexico where they could get more for their dollars.

The film concentrates on the life of labor and civil rights activist Cesar Chavez (played by Michael Pena), particularly the mid-1960s when Chavez was fighting for a minimum wage and better working conditions for California grape growers.

Rosario Dawson and America Ferrera also star in the film, coming soon.
