In their upcoming film The Campaign, Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis play two rival politicians that compete to win a spot in the U.S. House of Representatives, but despite their on-screen political characters, the two had a hard time recalling the current U.S. presidential candidates.
"Who are the guys again?" Ferrell joked when he and Galifianakis were asked if they were following current the current U.S. presidential race.

Galifianakis then chimed in, mentioning former Massachusetts governor and 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis. After a deluge of pensive snaps, Ferrell added Stars Wars character Chewbacca as the other candidate.
"We're back with the Dukakis-Chewbacca debate," Galifianakis mocked in an announcer's voice.

The comedic duo also had some outrageous answers for the people that inspired their characters in the film. Galifianakis associated former secretary of U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Colonel Oliver North and notable figure in the Iran-Contra affair, Fawn Hall as his inspiration, and Farrell said he channeled Betsy Ross, who created the first American flag, as his inspiration.
The two, who have crossed paths in the comedy world but have never made a film together until Campaign, talked about improvisation in the film, which Ferrell says is a given in most comedy films.

"Looking back on a movie, there's big chunks that were written and parts that were improvised, and it's usually all just mixed up together," he said. "We were encouraged [to improvise]. Jay (Roach, director) wants you to improvise and it's...a great way to work."
The Campaign is in theaters this Friday (August 10).
