Release Date: September 14
The Plot: Set in the 1950s, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a charismatic intellectual known as "The Master" who launches his own religion, a character reportedly based on Scientology creator L. Ron Hubbard. Joaquin Phoenix plays a World War II vet and drifter who becomes Hoffman's "inspiration" and right-hand man. Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons and David Warshovsky also star. "I am a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, a theoretical philosopher," says Hoffman's character to Phoenix. "But, above all, I am a man. Hopelessly inquisitive man, just like you."
Why It's a Must-See: Paul Thomas Anderson's follow-up to There Will Be Blood is arguably the most highly anticipated film of the fall, generating controversy before even a frame was seen by the public due to its parallels to the rise of Scientology, cracking open the Pandora's Box of the cult-like religion. The film was screened for Anderson's Magnolia star (and well-known Scientologist) Tom Cruise, who reportedly had a bone to pick with select elements of the film. Anderson proclaimed, "We are still friends. I showed him the film, and the rest is between us."
