Sony Animation's Hotel Transylvania, starring Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez, easily earned the No. 1 spot, pulling in $43 million. That number was also enough to set a new record as the all-time best September opening.

The time-traveling action flick Looper, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, had an excellent debut as well. In addition to pulling in $21.3 million domestically for second place, the film ranked No. 1 in China with expected grosses between $23 million and $25 million. That marks the first time that an American film debuted in China better than it did in the U.S.

Pitch Perfect debuted over the weekend in limited release, reeling in $5.2 million for sixth place behind End of Watch ($7.8 million), Trouble with the Curve ($7.5 million) and House at the End of the Street ($7.3 million). Pitch Perfect releases wide next Friday.
