The beast is back. Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as X-Men superhero Wolverine in 2013, and the new poster, as well as a few plot teasers, has been released for the highly anticipated sequel.
The simplistic, blurred image of Jackman, claws and all, is featured on the poster with just the movie release date on the bottom: 07-26-13.
Directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line), The Wolverine takes place in Japan this time around and follows the X-Men hero as he trains with a Samurai warrior.
"We've made a concerted effort to make the film feel more real, to pull back on the super duper abilities of Logan (Wolverine)," said Mangold in a live Q&A with Jackman today (via Entertainment Weekly). "Like, he doesn't bring down any airplanes. It's grounded."
That being said, the film will still include the action fans crave. "This is a tent-pole movie," Mangold assures. "There's outrageous action."
So, why Japan? "I wanted to place this story somewhere where Hugh and I could develop a movie which could create its own world, wouldn't have to, in a sense, hand off to another movie or answer to another movie,” Mangold says. "It finds Logan at a point when the X-Men are gone; Jean Grey is gone; a lot of the ties he had to the world are gone.”
