'42' Knocks it Out of the Park on Opening Weekend

The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 scored big at the box in its first weekend of release, effortlessly trotting over comedy Scary Movie 5, which was also in its first weekend at theaters.

The film, in which the late Robinson is portrayed by Chadwick Boseman, raked in an estimated $27.3 million over the weekend, while the ensemble comedy featuring Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen brought in $15.2 million, finishing in second.

Scary Movie 5
's opening weekend total was vastly smaller than that of the most recent Scary Movie film, which boasted an over $40 million in its premiere weekend in 2006.

Not far behind the fifth installment of the Scary Movie franchise, which released its first film in 2000, was the animated DreamWorks adventure-comedy The Croods.

The family-friendly film grossed an estimated $13.2 million over the weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $142.5 million after four weeks in theaters.

Joining The Croods in the nine-figure range in its third week of release was G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which soared to $102.4 million domestic with a $10.8 million third weekend.
