At the star-studded Hollywood premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, conversation quickly turned to Angelina Jolie and the recent news that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy. Singing Jolie's praises for deciding to share the private news was Trekkie and fellow femme-fatale Zoe Saldana, who looked lovely in a Rodarte dress, Jimmy Choo clutch and Oscar Tiye shoes.
"I hope she recovers quickly. If she were here I would say thank you for being so brave. And knowing that for sharing the personal experience you're going to empower and inspire a lot of women who are victims of cancer right now to heal and survive. She's the ultimate badass!"
In the editorial piece she wrote for the NY Times, Jolie said she was at a high risk for both breast and ovarian cancer. She didn't want her children to have to suffer the way she did when she lost her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to breast cancer in 2007 after suffering with the disease for over 10 years.
Also stopping by at the premiere was actress Fran Drescher, who likened Jolie to a "warrior goddess." The Nanny actress is no stranger to the struggles of cancer and underwent a hysterectomy after being misdiagnosed for two years and then properly diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2000. But instead of becoming bitter, the cancer survivor got better and penned Cancer Schmancer, and founded The Cancer Schmancer Movement, which is dedicated to turn women from patients into medical consumers.
"I think that the way she courageously comes forward and leverages her celebrity for the greater good is incredible and I have the utmost respect for her. Our paths crossed when her mother was suffering from cancer and I had uterine cancer and so we kind of shared similar concern for women's health."
The red carpet premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness found director JJ Abrams playing the role of proud papa. When asked if he thought Jolie would still have a swoon-worthy career after going under the knife for reconstructive breast surgery, Abrams said, "She's obviously one of the most beautiful women of all time and nothing will change."
After well wishes were passed around for the Girl, Interrupted actress, the conversation turned back to the task at hand -- the film's premiere. Chris Pine reprises the role of Captain Kirk -- originally played by William Shatner in the original 1960's TV series -- while Zachary Quinto steps into the shoes of Leonard Nimoy as Dr. Spock, Zoe Saldana plays Uhura and Alice Eve portrays Carol Marcus.
In this leg of the popular franchise, the crew of the USS Enterprise faces an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization. It's up to Captain Kirk to lead a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture the villain -- a one man weapon of mass destruction.
