Box Office: 'Star Trek' Beams Into No. 1 Spot

The Enterprise hit warp speed this weekend, soaring far ahead of its competition at the box office.

Star Trek Into Darkness, the follow-up to 2009's Star Trek, pulled in approximately $70 million for its opening weekend, beating out the reining champ, Iron Man 3, which amassed over $35 million in ticket sales since Friday.

Baz Luhrmann's big-screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby nabbed the no. 3 spot in its second week with nearly $23.5 million. The flashy flick found itself ahead of Pain and Gain, which earned a little over $3 million in its fourth week.

The family animated tale The Croods rounded out the top five for the weekend with nearly $2.8 million in ticket sales.
