'Fast & Furious' Smokes 'Hangover' at Box Office

The Memorial Day weekend showdown between mega franchises Fast & Furious and The Hangover was dominated by Fast & Furious 6, which pulled in $120 million domestic over the four-day weekend.

The Hangover Part III, which opened on Thursday, posted handsome numbers of $51.2 million domestic over the four-day weekend but was still doubled by the action series.

The final installment of the comedy franchise has now garnered $63 million domestic and $82.2 million worldwide, while Fast & Furious 6 has reeled in an estimated $317 million worldwide.

Joining The Hangover Part III and Fast & Furious 6 in the opening-weekend race was animated adventure film Epic, which finished fourth with a praiseworthy $42.6 million.

Although cast in obscurity by the Hangover's and Fast & Furious' opening weekend, sequel Star Trek into Darkness posted impressive numbers in its second weekend of release, adding $47 million over the four-day weekend to increase its domestic total to $155.8 million.

Blockbusters Iron Man 3 ($24.3 million, $372.4 million) and The Great Gatsby ($17 million, $117.7 million) both attracted plenty of moviegoers as well over the four-day weekend in their third weeks of release.

As the superhero film continues to climb towards $500 million domestic, Iron Man 3 has cashed in an astounding $1.15 billion worldwide, slotting in No. 5 all-time behind the final Harry Potter film ($1.34 billion).

Last year, Iron Man 3's studio, Marvel, chalked itself in history with a No. 3 spot on the all-time worldwide gross list with $1.51 billion for The Avengers. Fantasy film Avatar currently holds the top spot with $2.78 billion in 2009.
