William Golding's classic novel of a group of British schoolboys whose plane is shot down over a deserted tropical island was realized on film by renowned experimental theater director Peter Brook in 1960, and now it's back on Blu-ray and DVD in a special Criterion Collection release, newly restored with a digital transfer. The fascinating and frightening look at human nature -- the boys attempt to govern themselves and quickly devolve into warring factions -- is filmed in an innovative, documentary-like approach. Special features include audio commentary; audio recordings of Golding reading from his novel, accompanied by the corresponding scenes from the film; a deleted scene with optional commentary and Golding reading; behind-the-scenes home movies, screen tests, outtakes, stills and much more.
