Matt Damon's anticipated action return in Elysium yielded steady inflow at the box office this weekend, as the sci-fi action film topped all films with an estimated $30.5 million domestic gross total.
Although it boasted a first-place finish, Elysium had a legion of fellow first-week films on its heels, including We're The Millers, which finished a close second with a $25.7-million weekend.
The comedy's, starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudekis, gross domestic total now sits at $37.2 million, as the film premiered on Wednesday.
A pair of other opening films (3. Planes: $21 million 4. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters: $22.8 million) completed the newcomers' dominance of the box office's top spots.
Last weekend's top box-office flick, 2 Guns, topped out at No. 5 for the box office's tenured films. After a strong first weekend, the Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington film pulled in $11.3 million in its second weekend.
As Despicable Me 2 (9: $5.2 million, $337.8 million) continued its impressive box-office stay, Hugh Jackman's The Wolverine (7. $8 million, $112 million) crossed the $100-million domestic mark as it continues to flourish abroad ($194.7 million).
