Based on actual events, Foxcatcher also stars Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave and Sienna Miller in the story of a Gold Medal-winning Olympic wrestler named Mark Schultz (played by Tatum), who seeks to escape poverty and the shadow of his more established wrestler brother Dave (Ruffalo). When opportunity knocks in the form of an invitation to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics at the estate of eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (played by Carell), things unfortunately do not go as planned.

Despite a lack of qualifications, du Pont begins coaching in an effort to gain the respect of his disapproving mother, and soon the fragile Mark takes on dangerous habits, loses confidence and spirals into a self-destructive state in his desperate reach for greatness.
