The Exorcist: 40th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray

By DAVID WEINER

October 09, 2013

The most frightening film of the '70s remains the horror standard that all other supernatural possession films are compared to. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, director William Friedkin's classic contains two new featurettes: Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist, and Talk of the Devil, along with an excerpt from Friedkin's book, The Friedkin Connection: A Memoir. The new 40th anniversary edition includes both the original theatrical version of the film and the 2000 extended director's cut (famous for its "spider-walk" scene). Linda Blair plays young Regan McNeil, the daughter of an actress (Ellen Burstyn) whose strange behavior soon reveals itself to be a full-fledged demonic possession. Father Damian Karris (Jason Miller) and Father Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow) are recruited to save Regan before it's too late. Special features include the documentaries Raising Hell: Filming the Exorcist, The Exorcist Locations: Georgetown Then and Now and Faces of Evil: The Different Versions of The Exorcist; filmmaker commentaries; the 1998 BBC documentary The Fear of God: 25 Years of The Exorcist and more.
