The film adaptation of the popular sci-fi novel Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card proved a hit at the box office this weekend, claiming the top spot over a pair of fellow opening films.

Ender's Game, starring English actor Asa Butterfield as Ender and Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff, pulled an estimated $27.6 million domestic in its first weekend, nabbing the top spot from Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa.

Bad Grandpa, a hidden-camera comedy starring Johnny Knoxville, trailed in second with $20.8 million, boosting its cumulative total to $62.3 million for two weeks.

A pair of openers claimed the next two spots over box-office megahit Gravity. Last Vegas, a comedy starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas, and Robert De Niro, reaped $16.3 million, and the animated comedy Free Birds finished slightly below with a $16-million opening.

The space thriller behemoth Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, finished in fifth for its fifth weekend in theaters. With another steady $13.1 million over the weekend, the film has amassed $219.2 million domestic.

Trailing behind Gravity as it has for the duration of its box-office run was the biographical at-sea drama Captain Phillips. The Tom Hanks film stacked up $8.5 million to increase its gross domestic total to $82.6 million.

Drafting behind the aforementioned films, which are both forecast for awards acclaim, was another awards-buzzing film, 12 Years a Slave. Despite only running in 410 theaters, the biographical drama raked in $4.8 million.

Rounding out the box office after no. 8 Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 ($4.1 million, $106.1 million) were the underperformers The Counselor ($3.4 million, $13.8 million) and the horror film remake Carrie ($3.4 million, $32 million), which struggled to attract moviegoers for their respective second and third weekends of release.
