Intolerance on Blu-ray

By DAVID WEINER

November 05, 2013

Director D.W. Griffith's epic film triumph about man's inhumanity to man makes the leap to Blu-ray with Carl Davis' orchestral score in 5.1 Dolby Digital! The 1916 film featuring a cast of thousands and massive sets in the days when movies were major cross-cuts between four different tales of "intolerance" set in four different times: The Modern Story, The Judean Story, The Medieval Story and The Babylonian Story. Many of the leading stars of the silent screen appear in the film, including Griffith regular Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Elmo Lincoln, Robert Harron and Constance Talmadge. Bonus features include the two full-length features drawn from the film -- The Fall of Babylon and The Mother and the Law -- accompanied by new scores by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra; a 2013 featurette with film historian Kevin Brownlow; new essays by Cineaste magazine editor Richard Porton and historian William M. Drew; and a theatrical re-release trailer.
