Matilda -- which was based on the children's book by British author Roald Dahl -- tells the story of the charming and intelligent Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson), who is completely different from her low-brow, eccentric parents, played by DeVito and Perlman.

"I just thought Mrs. Wormwood was probably the one I might get cast in, if I knew the director," Perlman jokes, referring to her husband DeVito's directing duties.
