One of the challenges for pulling off a successful film is finding the right music to complement the acting and special effects and this was the unique task before Steven Price, who composed the Oscar-nominated score for the space thriller Gravity. We've got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Price's process for producing the musical illusion of outer space!

Price -- whose score for the Academy Award contender also received a Critics Choice Award as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations -- utilized many musicians, including a 58-person string orchestra, over roughly 60 hours to complete the movie's soundtrack.

A challenge for Price was to provide the musical background for the emotion and character of the film, while also taking on the role of more traditional sound effects through ever-evolving musical sound design. To do this, he blurred the lines between electronic and organic sounds, incorporating a wide range of elements, from glass harmonicas to string and brass sections, to capture the on-screen emotion while reflecting the vast landscape of the film.

"To be involved in Alfonso's creative process is to be invited to try anything you can think of and push further than you ever have before," Price explained. "The score didn't need to abide by traditional rules, but it did need to be immersive. As you sit in the theater, the music literally moves around you and seeks to put you within the experience."
