'Mr. Peabody' Climbs To Top Spot
This weekend broke the streak of new releases dominating the top spot at the box office, with both new releases failing to make a huge dent, and allowing last week's second place movie, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, to claw its waybac up to the top.
#1. 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman'
Despite being written off as a bit of a flop last weekend, Mr. Peabody proved its potential for staying power by nabbing $21.2 million, and managing to secure the top spot this week, up from second last week, with only a %34 drop off in earnings. It still hasn't recouped its budget, and with Muppets Most Wanted coming out next weekend it’s not clear how well Mr. Peabody will fare in the future.
#2. '300: Rise Of An Empire'
Dropping from first to second in its second weekend, 300: Rise Of An Empire snagged $19.1, a sharp 57.6% decline from it's opening weekend's haul. It currently has $78.3 million domestically.
#3. 'Need For Speed'
Despite a strong Friday showing, this high-octane road race thriller couldn't sustain its momentum and ended up in a disappointing third place with only $17.8 million.
#4. 'Non-Stop'
Liam Neeson continues to show that audiences want to watch him punch people in the face. Non-Stop took in another $10.6 million to bring its domestic total to $68.8 million.
#5. 'Tyler Perry's The Single Moms Club'
Despite the usual box office pull that comes with Tyler Perry films, this particular showing failed to take the box office by storm, pulling in only $8.3 million in it's opening weekend.
#6. 'The LEGO Movie'
While it might not have the box office top ten staying power of Disney's Frozen, The LEGO Movie has proved itself to be a critical darling and, after its $7.7 million take this weekend, has still earned a whopping $236.9 million off a relatively-low $60 million budget.
#7. 'Son Of God'
This life story of Jesus managed to pull in another $5.4 million, bringing its domestic haul to $50.8 million.
#8. 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'
FOX
Managing to appear in the top ten despite only screening in 66 theaters is a massive triumph, and Wes Anderson's new offering snagged $3.6 million, meaning that it earned $55,000 per screen this weekend. More than 11 times what the first place film managed per screen.
#9. 'Frozen'
Walt Disney
Still in the top ten after 16 weeks, or an even-more impressive sounding 115 days, Frozen earned another $2.1 million to bring its domestic take to $396.3 million. Worldwide, the film has amassed over $1.02 billion.
#10. 'Veronica Mars'
Warner Bros.
One of the first major released of a crowd-funded feature film, Veronica Mars is a feature film continuation of a beloved TV that was cancelled due to low ratings. The film managed to take $2.1 million while only screening in 291 theaters, and was released simultaneously on VOD, meaning its true earnings may not really be known for some time.
