Things couldn't look bleaker in this tense action-packed new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past, released earlier today by 20th Century Fox.

Incorporating post-apocalyptic elements with government-controlled dystopian themes, time travel, and super-powered mutants, this new installment in the X-Men franchise may just be able to push all those right buttons to create a juggernaut of superhero flick.

The story blends the casts from the X-Men series and the X-Men: First Class franchise into one star-studded ensemble including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Peter Dinklage, Nicholas Hoult, Anna Paquin, and Ellen Page, to name a few.

Director Bryan Singer, who directed the original X-Men movie in 2000 and its acclaimed sequel X-2, is back to helm this conglomeration, and he's bringing with him a gritty yet colorful style and dramatic flair.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to hit theaters (and likely dominate the box office) May 23, 2014.
