First Look: 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Starts Filming

Late last night, director J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot tweeted a photo of a film slate for Star Wars: Episode VII with the hashtag "#dayone," announcing principal photography on the highly anticipated sequel.

The slate has the date 5/16 with grains of sand splashed onto it, a strong suggestion that we could be returning to the desert planet of Tatooine. The planet is a favorite of the franchise, featured in each of the Star Wars films with the exception of The Empire Strikes Back.

A second photo posted
to the official Star Wars Facebook page shows the exterior of Pinewood Studios in London displaying Star Wars: Episode VII signage, simply stating, "VII Now Filming."

A black-and-white photo of the new cast was released last month at a table read along with an official announcement of the actors on board. The film welcomes newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow alongside the stars of the original saga: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.

Star Wars: Episode VII
(with rumored working title The Ancient Fear) is scheduled to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015.
