Godzilla stomped its way across theaters this weekend, scaring up a whopping $93.2 million in sales, which was far more than even the generous estimates that predicted a $70-80 million opening weekend.
The Gareth Edwards-directed monster epic, a remake of the 1954 classic, stars Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ken Watanabe. It tells a beautifully-executed and bigger-than-life story of a giant monster who wreaks havoc, but may be the only thing preventing the total annihilation of the human race.
The movie earned an additional $103 million in overseas sales bringing its worldwide total gross to $196.2 million, off a $160 million dollar budget. With a very-respectable 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating generally positive reviews, and higher temperatures which drive many people into the air-conditioned comfort of the cinema, Godzilla could prove to be a multi-weekend juggernaut.
In second place at the box office was last week's leader Neighbors, which still managed to score an impressive $25.9 million, bringing its two-weekend total to $91.5 million, many times its relatively-low $18 million budget.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 dropped into third place, earning $16.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $172.1 million, but the film is still dominating overseas. Spider-Man 2 has a combined worldwide total of $461 million, meaning it is almost definite Andrew Garfield will be rocking the red and blue spandex again soon.
The weekend's only other wide-release newcomer, Disney's Million Dollar Arm, came in fourth place with $10.5 million. The inspirational sports story starring Jon Hamm, follows a baseball agent who travels to India looking for a potential new pitching star. The film has not yet opened in any overseas markets, but could potentially play very well in India.
The romantic revenge comedy The Other Woman dropped from third to fourth place, bringing in another $6.3 million, for a total domestic gross of $71.6 million, far above its $40 million budget.
The faith-based Heaven Is For Real landed in sixth place with another $4.4 million, while the family-friendly Rio 2 scored $3.8 million more.
Captain America: The Winter Solider dropped hard, falling from fifth place to eighth, and only managing to snag $3.7 million, however its previous weeks' earnings are phenomenally substantial, with a total domestic gross of $250.6 million, and a combined worldwide gross of $703.4 million.
Legends Of Oz: Dorothy's Return, with $1.95 million, and Moms' Night Out, with $1.9 million, round out the weekend top ten.
Next weekend, the hotly anticipated X-Men: Days Of Future Past opens wide. Will Godzilla be able to hold its top spot against this army of beloved mutants, or will Wolverine and Magneto knock the mega monster down a peg?
