X-Men: Days Of Future Past
swept into theaters this weekend, claiming the top spot and earning itself $90.7 million. Was this No. 1 spot really a success? For the answer, we back at the franchise's box-office openings from the last 14 years.

The first X-Men film, directed by Days Of Future Past cinematographer Bryan Singer, opened to $54.4 million in 2000, with X2 opening to $85.5 million three years later. Brett Ratner took over directing duties for X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, which still has the highest opening-to-date of any X-Men film with $102.7 million.

After that, returns began to dip. X-Men Origins: Wolverine dropped back down to X2 levels with an $85 million opening, while X-Men: First Class opened at $55.1 million and 2013's The Wolverine opened at $53.1.

So, while Days Of Future Past wasn't the biggest X-Men opening of all time, it did open massively larger than all recent X-Men-related films. Adding its foreign sales, which were $171 million, the film's worldwide gross was $261.7 million. Not an unimpressive haul by any measure.

However, many other big-budget sci-fi and superhero films that have opened this year already had higher-grossing weekends, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($91.6 million) and even last week's Godzilla ($93.1 million).

Godzilla
dropped from first to second, with X-Men stealing a lot of its thunder. The film earned $31.4 million this weekend, dropping 66.3% from last week. Its cumulative domestic gross is $148.7 million, just shy of breaking even with its $160 million production budget.

Adam Sandler's new comedy Blended, co-starring Drew Barrymore, opened soft in third place with only $14.2 million. It was one of the comic's worst weekend openings ever, and even worse when you take into consideration that the film was rated PG-13. Most of Sandler's family friendly films open in the $30-40 million range, making this bomb all the more surprising.

The comedy hit Neighbors, starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, took in another $13.9 million (only $300,000 less than Blended) in its third weekend, pushing the film to a combined gross of $113 million, over six times the film's $18 million production budget.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
dropped two places to No. 5, earning $7.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $184.9 million, still short of its estimated $200-250 million production budget. However, it's still dominating overseas, earning an additional $489 million in foreign sales.

Disney's Million Dollar Arm dropped two places down to No. 6, earning $7 million, bringing its total to $20.6 million, within throwing distance from its $25 million budget.

The Other Woman
followed suit, dropping two spots to seventh and bringing in $3.6 million, while the animated family film Rio moved into eighth, and earned another $2.5 million.

Jon Favreau's comedy Chef, starring Favreau as a gourmet chef who opens his own food truck, entered its third weekend and moved into the top 10 by opening in additional theaters for a wider release. The film opened in limited release on May 9, then expanded to 72 theaters last weekend, and this weekend it expanded further into 498 theaters, earning itself an additional $2.2 million and nabbing ninth place.

The faith-based film Heaven Is For Real moved from sixth to 10th and raked in $1.9 million, closing out the box-office top 10.
