The Damned United

By DAVID WEINER

Release: 2009

Stars: Michael Sheen, Colm Meaney, Timothy Spall, Jim Broadbent

Plot: The mostly true tale of Brian Clough's doomed 44-day tenure as manager of Leeds United, the reigning champions of English football in the late '70s, and a team whose dirty style of play was at odds with Clough's eccentric coaching style.

Why It Scores: Darkly humorous, with a script by Oscar-nominated writer Peter Morgan and frequent Michael Sheen collaborator (The Queen, Frost/Nixon), this film adequately captures the friction and pressures off the field as well as on the pitch with humor, heart and skill.
